About the Author

In the United States to pursue a Master's degree in environmental journalism, Apoorva Joshi was born and raised in India. Growing up, she spent most of her time in and around the Indian wilderness and developed a strong passion for wildlife.

She has studied the Indian Gharial, a critically endangered species of crocodile, for and has helped radio-track wild King cobras in the dense evergreen forests of the Western Ghats. She is also the founder of a youth group that worked together for bringing to light environmental issues in her hometown. She volunteered with an eco-tourism organization and has practical experience in animal rescue which took off from her days as a toddler who thought bringing home abandoned animals was better than homework.

Apoorva has a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science from Fergusson College, Pune, India. She enjoys spending time in the 'natural world', has an unquenchable thirst for good music, and die-hard fan of Indian cinema.

Her passion for animals, combined with a desire to make people more aware of environmental issues and their significance, led her down the journalism path. She believes that her motto, "conservation through communication", has immense potential to unite two very different yet extremely compatible fields: journalism and conservation.

Apoorva is primarily interested in covering the international wildlife trade as a reporter. In the United States, she will be able to look at the various aspects of the wildlife trade including the trade in exotic animals. Her time in the USA will enable her to meet new people, understand American culture and gauge the attitude people have towards animals. This will, in the long run, add to her research and allow her to cover animals issues with a more informed, holistic approach.
